OA-Thurrock’s ‘Olive to College’ programme supports students into further education

OA-Thurrock’s Olive to College programme is helping Year 11 students build confidence, independence and the skills needed to successfully transition into further education.

The programme provides tailored support for students as they prepare for life beyond the academy, ensuring they are equipped both academically and personally for their next steps.

As part of the programme, students attend off-site placements linked to their chosen college pathway or future career interests. Delivered through local partners, the sessions give young people the opportunity to experience learning in a new environment while developing important life skills and greater independence.

Students travel independently, manage their own lunch breaks, wear their own clothes and adapt to different routines and expectations - all helping to bridge the gap between school and college life. Alongside this, students work towards qualifications that align with college entry requirements, supporting them to access their chosen courses.

The programme also offers comprehensive guidance throughout the transition process, including support with college applications, open evenings, taster days and, where needed, links with SEND teams at colleges to ensure appropriate support is in place.

Importantly, the support does not stop when students leave the academy in the summer term. Staff continue to work with young people through to the following January after they leave, helping ensure a successful and sustained transition into further education.

The programme has already seen significant success and reflects our commitment to preparing students not only for qualifications, but for life beyond the classroom. By combining personalised support, real-world experiences and strong partnerships, we are helping young people move forward with confidence and ambition.

I can’t thank the staff enough at OA-Thurrock for everything they have done to help my son. The staff worked so hard to gain his trust after being failed by his previous school. There was effort and determination to help him complete his exams and get a college placement. He’s now about to start his first full time job. I feel he wouldn’t have got to this positive stage without you. These children are so lucky to have the most dedicated staff to help them achieve their goals.
