We provide a broad, ambitious curriculum which encourages our pupils in KS3 and KS4 to recognise their personal learning journey and take pride in the beautiful work they produce. The fundamental principles of our curriculum:

  • give pupils real-world experiences
  • deliver outstanding teaching
  • offer rigorous and high-quality critique and feedback of pupils’ work
  • develop dynamic leadership – including staff and pupil leadership
  • create a culture of respect.

Here is our academy’s curriculum plan:

Our aim is to support each pupil’s smooth and successful transition back into mainstream school.

At the Olive AP Academy – Thurrock we offer a curriculum that meets the needs of learners in years 7 to 11 that is in line with the offer of local secondary schools. Subjects offered include English, mathematics, science, PE, ICT, business and enterprise studies, humanities, public services, digital media and music technology, personal & social education and cooking.

Pupils in years 10 and 11 have access to alternative provision with a range of providers. This enables each pupil to follow a vocational pathway that is personalised to their future needs. All pupils are provided with the opportunity to gain English and mathematics GCSE or equivalent before leaving the school in year 11. Our KS4 programme aims to prepare pupils for a range of college and work based options at the end of Year 11.

The academy provides all pupils with relationship and sex education (RSE) in line with government guidance.  Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Details of the curriculum and information for parents are included in our RSE policy.

As part of our careers programme, we ensure that pupils in years 8-11 find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities. Pupils will have the opportunity to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer – through options evenings, assemblies, group discussions and taster events. Our pupils are also shown how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses available to them.

Olive AP Academy – Thurrock also caters for small groups of secondary aged pupils with complex or medical needs. For some of these students home tuition is necessary due to their complex needs. The home tuition provided by the academy covers the core subjects; mathematics, English, science and ICT, but additional subjects are negotiable. There is additional access to a wider curriculum available through NISAI, our online provider of virtual lessons.
