Last week we took a group of our Year 11 students to the Amazon Distribution Centre in Tilbury for a behind-the-scenes tour of their operations.
The centre is huge at 2 million sq ft – the size of 28 football pitches. It is Amazon’s largest fulfilment centre in the UK. The students were able to see the various stages of the operation – from picking to stowing to packing. The highlight of the tour was seeing the famous ‘Orange Bots’ at work. The students were able to see firsthand cutting edge technology in action. Amazon’s Tilbury site is fitted out with advanced Amazon Robotics technology. The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre. Students learnt how this robotic technology uses QR codes pasted on the floor to navigate.
During their time at our academy, we give all our students the chance to meet professionals, experience being in the workplace and seeing the real world of work in action. Trips and visits like this are part of the careers programme we offer. It is these experiences which help our students to develop their ambitions for future study, apprenticeships, work placements and first jobs.
